Importance of IS 456 Code Book

The IS 456 : 2000 ( PLAIN AND REINFORCED CONCRETE ) was provided by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under Civil Engineering Division on Cement and Concrete. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is responsible for providing guidelines for design, material, and working procedure. With the joint approval of civil engineering council it has been publishing IS codes for civil engineering activity.
As a civil engineer one should know more in IS 456 code book. Read the entire code book at least once.
Some of the important basics are:

MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF STEEL: (clause 5.6.3)

The modulus of elasticity of steel shall be taken as 200 kN/mm2. The characteristic yield strength of different steel shall be assumed as the minimum yield stress/0.2 percent proof stress specified in the relevant Indian Standard.

MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF CONCRETE: (clause 6.2.3.1)
The modulus of elasticity of concrete can be assumed as

where,

Ec is the short term modulus of elasticity in N/mm2.

NOMINAL COVER TO MEET DURABILITY REQUIREMENTS: (clause 26.4.2 table 16)

UNIT WEIGHT: (clause 19.2.1)
Unless more accurate calculations are warranted, the unit weights of plain concrete and reinforced concrete made with sand and gravel or crushed natural stone aggregate may be taken as 24 kN/mmand 25 kN/mmrespectively.
